Conversion of your manuscript to Mobi/Kindle and ePub format

Manuscript conversion is included with every AuthorServicePaK™.

What are the details about the conversion process?

Most of our online bookstores accept the ePub format for eBooks they sell, except for Amazon’s Kindle that uses a version of Mobipocket. We convert your MSWord file to both of these formats.

What are your file conversion and delivery turnaround times?

From submission of the proofread manuscript, turnaround time can be up to 10 business days, depending on the number of pages, and whether or not there are graphic images.

Will I be able to follow the progress of my manuscript conversion?

Yes. You can follow the progress of your project by clicking the “view” link to the right of the title in your Authorlog™ Account. When you do so, the status will be “Conversion Ready,” “Delivery Ready,” “Encoding Requested,” or “Delivered.”

  • Conversion Ready” means that your manuscript has met our Manuscript Guidelines and is ready for conversion to Mobipocket/Kindle and ePub formats.
  • Delivery Ready” means your manuscript has completed the eBook conversion process, and will be delivered to the eBbook retailer within approximately five (5) business days from the completion date.
  • Encoding Requested” means your eBook has been delivered to the e-book retailer, and they have asked for additional technical or metadata information. If Madison Avenue Publishing is unable to provide the information based on the information you provided in your eBook Submission Questionnaire, you will be contacted.
  • Delivered” means your eBook has been delivered to the eBookstore.

What kinds of file formats will you accept for Mobipocket/Kindle and ePub conversion?

MSWord (.doc, docx format) only. This is because in the event your manuscript is edited [ a proofread edit is included in the Author AuthorServicePaK™] or in the event you purchase the proofread edit, or advanced editing, our editors use the “Review” protocols of MSWord. At the very least, we strongly urge new authors to have their work proofread. Even if you don’t, the submission guidelines are the same. See Manuscript Guidelines.

Will you send me a proof of my Mobi/Kindle or e-Pub file before you deliver it?

Yes. may access the soft proof of your work in each of the three venues:

Proofread Edit

You have expended a lot of time, effort and energy in writing your book. If you’ve been at your craft for a while, you realize that proofreading your own work is not a good idea, nor is it prudent to have a friend or relative review it. You need an independent, qualified editor to look at it word-by-word, page-by-page, to assure, at a minimum, that it passes our “GPS” Test-Grammar, Punctuation, Spelling.

Mark Twain, in an 1898 letter to Sir Walter Besant, shared his thoughts about the frustrations of attempting to proofread your own writing:

You think you are reading proof, whereas you are merely reading your own mind; your statement of the thing is full of holes & vacancies but you don’t know it, because you are filling them from your mind as you go along. Sometimes–but not often enough–the printer’s proof-reader saves you–& offends you–with this cold sign in the margin: (?) & you search the passage & find that the insulter is right–it doesn’t say what you thought it did: the gas-fixtures are there, but you didn’t light the jets.”

Still unsure about whether or not you want your manuscript proofread? Read on.

A short Q&A about proofreading and editing

What is proofreading?

Proofreading is a slow and methodical search for typographical mistakes, omitted words or word endings, and misspellings.

Who is qualified to be a proofreader?

There is no standardized test; however, at Madison Avenue Publishing we have our standards:

  • At a minimum, the editor must have a Bachelor’s Degree in one of the English disciplines
  • We prefer editors who are graduates of or are in the process of attending MFA programs in creative writing
  • English teachers who have been grading submissions by students for many years are also a preference
  • The editor must be a competent writer
  • The editor must be able to effectively communicate his or her proofreading decisions regarding the manuscript to the author
  • The editor must be familiar with the “Review” protocols of MSWord
  • The editor must be able to facilitate an online chat, should the author elect to participate in this option, for purposes of explaining proofreading suggestions to the manuscript
  • The editor must be courteous when dealing with an author.

Are there other edits an author should consider?

Yes. We have a number of editing options available to our writers. Click on Advanced Editing.

Editorial Assessment

With our Editorial Assessment you will receive the following:

Our senior editor will read up to 35 double-spaced pages of your manuscript and prepare a multipage report that offers critical feedback intended to enhance the publication potential of your work.

For a fiction manuscript, our senior editor will offer commentary on character development and motivations, point of view (a key concern with most new and developing fiction writers), scenes, plot, tension, dialogue, tone, diction, syntax, and overall clarity and readability.

For nonfiction, the nature of the feedback will vary greatly, depending on your manuscript. For creative narratives such as memoir, personal essays, or biography, many of the fiction elements will apply. Fact-checking (for nonfiction and fiction) remains the author’s responsibility, but obvious concerns will be noted in the Editorial Review.

For all genres ( poetry, fiction and nonfiction) our senior editor will point out sample proofreading errors involving spelling, punctuation, grammar, and formatting. The author will receive a wide range of feedback. In many cases, the editor will recommend an editing service for you to consider right away. In other cases, the editor will make recommendations for you, the author, to consider before resubmitting.

What is the cost of an Editorial Assessment?

A one-time fee of $275.00

ISBN and EAN Codes

An ISBN is included with every eBook AuthorServicePaK™. An EAN is included with every eBook and Print AuthorServicePaK™.

ISBN is an acronym for International Standard Book Number. The purpose of the 13-digit ISBN number is to establish and identify one title or edition of a title from one specific publisher. ISBNs are linked to essential information allowing booksellers and readers to know what book they are buying, what the book is about, and the author. Unlike a Bar Code, an ISBN is a number that acts like an ordering number.

Separate ISBNs are required for a paperback book, casebound (hardcover), and e-book. All e-books published by Madison Avenue Publishing include an ISBN for the digital publication.

For print, Madison Avenue Publishing includes an ISBN with a price add-on that utilizes the Bookland EAN barcode. Commonly known as the EAN-5, it displays two barcodes side by side. Here’s an example of a barcode recently published by an affiliated company, Madison Avenue Publishing Inc.:

ISBN

The first barcode on the left is the EAN derived from the ISBN. The barcode on the right, which is smaller, is a 5-digit add-on that displays the retail price of the publication. The “5” in the 5-digit add-on reflects the currency for the purchase of the book is US dollars.

In order to utilize a barcode, the book must have an ISBN.

Most retailers and distributors will not accept books that do not have a barcode. The barcode is placed on the back cover of your book.

If you intend to publish your book in print in addition to digital format, the ISBN and the Bookland EAN barcode for your paperback book is included in the print packages offered by Madison Avenue Publishing.

90% of Net Royalties on eBooks

You’ll receive 100% of the digital text product net proceeds until your are fully reimbursed for any fees and costs associated with the publishing of your work. Thereafter, you’ll get 90% of your royalty share of digital text product net proceeds.

Submission to Amazon’s “Search Inside the Book™” program

Submission to Amazon’s “Search Inside the Book™” program is included with all AuthorServicePaKs™.

Madison Avenue Publishing urges its authors to participate in Amazon’s “Search Inside the Book” Program™ because its customers (and there are many!) have the opportunity to sample participating books using their proprietary “Look Inside” reader.

From both Kindle and Print previews customers can:

  • Sample pages from within the reader
  • Switch back and forth between the print and Kindle samples without leaving the reader
  • View books on similar topics and previously viewed books

Within the print sample, customers can also preview random pages and search for specific references or characters.

When a customer decides to purchase your book they can conveniently do so from within the Look Inside reader. An Add-to-Cart or Buy-with-1-Click button can be found throughout the customer’s previewing experience, eliminating the need to return to the book detail page.

When customers search for books with the Search Inside the Book Program™, Amazon uses the actual words from inside participating print books–not just the author, title, and keywords supplied by Madison Avenue Publishing to return the best possible selection of books. For matches inside the book, Amazon also displays a short excerpt and links to the page where the query matched.

For example, Bobby Book Buyer (who aspires to finish his first novel but has “writer’s block”) remembers browsing a book with a chapter entitled “writing around the block,” but doesn’t remember the title to the book or the author. If he puts the phrase “writing around the block” into the Search bar on Amazon.com, John Dufresne’s hardcover and Kindle edition of “The Lie that Tells A Truth” will appear when he clicks “Go.”

Eligible for book trailers

The book trailer is a powerful marketing tool. A new title can rise above competitors thanks to the force behind a 60-second video. Movie trailers have tantalized the public for decades. Now book trailers have re-purposed this one-minute production to the literary audience. While the job of the video is to profile an author’s new title into the marketplace, it must entertain the viewer as well. Hence, we work closely with our design team crafting a video teaser about your story. Then we position the trailer at strategic points of visibility, such as AuthorWebChat™, social networking, ad campaigns, with book clubs, and in press kits.

Remember, this is digital publishing. So make your book trailer part of the signature block in your own e-mail correspondence. Every time you send a note from your computer you offer the recipient a look at your trailer. In all likelihood, you’ve received a noteworthy video on your computer screen and flipped it to friend. Consider that friend flipping your book trailer to others, and they to their friends. Now you’ve got the idea!

Professionally produced book trailers are an optional feature of our publishing package. The book trailers do not contain animation or acting by live actors in scenes. They feature static scenes with text, voiceover, and music.

Eligible for advanced editing

For those authors who wish a complete editorial review of their work, we provide advanced editing services that are outlined below. Advanced editing is not included in our AuthorServicePaKs™, but may be purchased by authors who are serious about their work.

Once our review of your manuscript [for compliance with Manuscript Guidelines ] is complete, prior to conversion to eBook or print, we recommend a proofread edit. This edit is included in the Author AuthorServicePaKor you may purchase this service separately.

Some authors want a comprehensive overview of their work before they consider an edit. For a fixed price of $275.00 our editors will conduct a Detailed Editorial Assessment. The particulars are as follows:

Detailed Editorial Assessment: The editor will read up to thirty-five double-spaced pages of author’s manuscript and prepare a multipage report that offers critical feedback intended to enhance the publication potential of the author’s work. For a fiction manuscript, the editor will offer commentary on character development and motivations, point of view (a key concern with most new and developing fiction writers), scenes, plot, tension, dialogue, tone, diction, syntax, and overall clarity and readability. For nonfiction, the nature of the feedback will vary greatly, depending on the author’s manuscript. For creative narratives such as memoir, personal essays, or biography, many of the fiction elements will apply. Fact-checking (for nonfiction and fiction) remains the author’s responsibility, but obvious concerns will be noted in the editorial review. For all genres (fiction and nonfiction) the editor will point out sample proofreading errors involving spelling, punctuation, syntax (grammar), and formatting. The author will receive a wide range of feedback. In many cases, the editor will recommend an editing service for the author to consider right away. In other cases, the editor will make recommendations for the author to consider before resubmitting.

Editing Levels

Madison Avenue Publishing can provide several levels of editing to is authors. They include:

  • Developmental Edit. This edit includes character development, plot, [fiction] consistency/standardization, sentence clarity, word choice, redundancies and/or inaccuracies in text, maintenance of tone/voice, content organization, flow/transitions, evaluation of sentence structure, and presentation; however, the Developmental Edit is not a comprehensive Line Edit. Instead, the editor does a Line Edit of only five percent (5%) of the manuscript. We recommend a Developmental Edit for most manuscripts that have not otherwise been edited. It provides a substantial cost savings, and it gives the author a road map of where the editor believes the author should go to improve his or her work.
  • Copy Edit. This includes spelling, grammar, punctuation, and formatting. It does not include syntax, compression, clarity, or other issues that are addressed in the Developmental Edit and the Line Edit.A Copy Edit assumes that the content is set and the manuscript needs only a fine-tuning of language. A Copy Edit will ensure consistency of style and elimination of errors, and it is usually the appropriate editing level for a manuscript that has already been revised and vetted for content.
  • Line Edit. A detailed, line-by-line process to correct errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation. In addition, the editor will make recommendations to improve syntax and word choice. This approach is most appropriate for manuscripts that are otherwise ready for publication. For authors struggling with point of view, plot, clichés, scene development, tone, and a host of other issues, the Developmental Edit should be addressed first. One of our senior editor’s concerns is this: “Why line edit a manuscript that needs to be blown up in revision? That’s not the best use of the author’s resources.” Of course, as is always the case, our independent editors will work with each author to satisfy his or her requirements.
  • Comprehensive Edit. An analysis of grammar, syntax, and spelling, plus an in-depth review of the work’s character development, content, and flow. The editor works closely with the author. Our editors recommend a Developmental Edit prior to this edit level. However, for authors wanting a more in-depth review prior to determining a road map after initial evaluation, this edit is available.

Editing Fees

  • Developmental Edit.
$.04/word. Communication time: About 90 minutes (roughly 30 minutes at the front end and 60 minutes upon completion).
  • Copy Edit.
$.02/word. Communication time between author and editor (up to 30 minutes, primarily at the conclusion of the Copy Edit).
  • Line Edit.
$.03/word. Communication time between author and editor (up to 60 minutes, primarily at the conclusion of the Line Edit).
  • Comprehensive Edit.
$.05/word, Communication time between author and editor: up to two hours, with approximately 30 minutes prior to the edit and up to 90 minutes upon completion.

Print Products (Trade-Softcover)

The Print Publishing Package includes all of the features of the e-Book Publishing Package together with:

Custom printed book interior design

Our custom eCover has lured another potential purchaser to take a look at the interior of your book, perhaps through Amazon’s “Search Inside the Book™” program. They click for a preview. What they see next will prove, or disprove the old adage “You can’t judge a book by looking at its cover.”

We believe a professionally formatted book interior is very important to your success as an author. In fact, we insist upon the best design because under our “We Guarantee It!” warranty, it has to look like it came from a Big Five Publisher, or you get your money back. . .all of it.

Our layout for your printed book includes the usual front matter that you see in traditionally published books. Front matter contents would include such items as a title page, copyright page, dedication, table of contents, forward, preface, acknowledgments, introduction, and a prologue. The body of the book would include a chapter opening page, the interior text with page number, chapter/section headings, and running heads, epilogue, afterward, and conclusion. In the back matter our designers would include the postscript, appendix or addendum, chronology, notes, glossary, bibliography, list of contributors, index and colophon.

Obtaining of Library of Congress Control Number (LCCN) from the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.

Eligible for IBPA (Independent Book Publishers Association) Marketing Programs

IBPA Marketing Programs eligibility. Prices vary and are additional.

Through our membership in the Independent Book Publishers Association [IBPA], Madison Avenue Publishing offers innovative IBPA Marketing Programs to its authors who purchase the Author eBook & Print AuthorServicePaK™, or who purchase a proofread edit (as a minimum).

The IBPA programs are as follows:

Library Market E-Blast $199.00 per title per mailing

Present your title(s) alongside only 14 others in a special e-blast to 5,000 qualified collection development librarians.

Three options to choose from: Public Library, K-12 Library, and College Library.

New for 2014, IBPA has launched an exciting new way to reach the library market. In cooperation with The Library Resource Group, an opt-in database of over 80,000+ library decision-makers, IBPA will send dedicated e-blasts containing IBPA member titles to a select group of 5,000 librarians for each of the Public Library, K-12 Library, and College Library markets.

How it works:

Twelve times a year (six Public Library e-blasts; three K-12 Library e-blasts; three College Library e-blasts) IBPA will design a targeted e-blast containing information about IBPA member titles. Each e-blast will contain only 15 titles.

Your listing will include your title’s cover image, a 50-word description, our wholesaler information[Ingram], and a unique, lead-generating link of your choosing. IBPA will choose a list of 5,000 librarians for each e-blast based on those with the highest budgets and buying potential.

What to expect:

Results will vary. However, the average response to e-blasts of this nature is generally higher than other services and products sent to librarians. Response to these e-blasts generally range from 7-14%. For a deployment to 5,000 names, there will be approximately 400-700 leads across all titles.

  • Best case: Many librarians review your information and order your title(s).
  • Average case: Several librarians review your information and order your title(s).
  • Worst case: Exposure to the library market.

IBPA designs four-color catalogs featuring a front cover picture of your book, along with a 100-word description. Also included are ISBN, price, a maximum of three distributors/wholesalers, and Madison Avenue Publishing’s name and address (which is not included as part of the 100-word description). All descriptive paragraphs will be edited to meet the 100-word requirement.

Eligible for book trailer

There are several levels of editing that are available to our authors. Please see our Advanced Editing Page for details and pricing.
